How to Draw an Onion Step by Step
This simple tutorial shows how to drawn an onion bulb with some green leaves in six easy steps. It includes illustrated examples with quick explanations.
You can see a preview of the different drawing stages for the onion in the image above.
This is a very easy tutorial but it’s still recommended that you start in pencil and make light lines that are easy to erase in case you make a mistake.
Step 1 – Draw the Shape of the Onion Bulb
Begin by drawing each side of the onion bulb. They do not have to be perfectly symmetrical but try to get them as similar to one another as you can. Leave some room between the two and also be sure to leave plenty of room at the top of the page for the leaves.
Step 2 – Add the Top & Bottom of the Bulb
Now close the gaps between the lines form the previous step. The top part where the onion transitions into the leaves usually tends to be fairly uneven. Draw that area as a set of random sized pointy clumps.
Close up the bottom gap where the the roots grow form with just a wobbly line.
Step 3 – Draw the Leaves
Growing from the top part of the bulb draw the leaves. Start by adding the ones in front first and then the ones sticking out from behind them. Draw each one with a bit of a curve so that they spread farther apart as they go up.
Step 4 – Draw the Roots
In way somewhat similar to the leaves (but much smaller) draw the roots. Make these slightly “wobbly” where a few of them have wave like shapes bending in one direction and then another.
Again draw the roots in front first and then add the ones that are partially hidden behind them.
Step 5 – Finish the Line Drawing
To finish the line drawing first add a few lines that curve along the onion bulb and give it that characteristic onion look. Make some of these fairly short and some much longer.
Once your done with the above and happy with your drawing you can trace over it with either darker pencil lines, a black pen or a thin black marker.
Step 6 – Color the Onion
To color the onion you can make the bulb a golden brown and the leaves green (leave the roots white). Also leave one or two white spots on the bulb for the reflections (where the light is reflecting from it’s shiny skin).
If coloring with paints you can mix some orange, brown, and yellow to get the bulb color. If coloring with pencils you can do the same by simply going over your drawing with several layers of color. Also be sure not to press too hard on the pencils when coloring or the initial layer may become to dark to color mix with the rest.
Conclusion
Making an onion drawing like the one in this tutorial can be fairly quick and easy. Especially when you have a step by step guide like the one provided in this tutorial. Hopefully your happy with the way your drawing turned out.
