How to Draw an Artist’s Brush Step by Step
This tutorial shows how to draw an artist’s paint brush in five steps. It includes easy illustrated examples and quick drawing tips.
The brush in this example (you can see the drawing steps for it above) is the kind that is generally used by artists for painting. For a different type of brush see:

While this is a very simple tutorial it’s still recommended that you start it in pencil and make light and easy to erase lines (in case you make a mistake). You can trace over your drawing later on with a black pen or marker.
Step 1 – Draw an Outline of the Brush/Bristles
Begin by drawing the combined shape of the bristles that make up the brush. Make it narrower at the base wider as it goes towards the middle and finally give it a long and pointy tip that that also slightly curve in one direction.
Step 2 – Draw the Handle
Onto the brush add the handle. Again make it narrower towards the brush, then slightly wider and then again narrower as it goes towards the back ending with a rounded tip.
Step 3 – Draw the Ferrule
For this quick step simply draw a lightly curved line to indicate the length of the ferrule. The metallic part that holds the bristles of the brush.
Step 4 – Add Some Details & Finish the Line Drawing
Into the outlined of the brush from the first step add some hints of individual bristles. You can draw these with just a few curved lines coming from the tip and the base of the brush.
Once done with the bristles confirm that your drawing looks the way you want it to and trace over your lines with a black pen or marker. If you don’t have one of those around just darken your lines with the pencil.
Step 5 – Color the Brush
To color the brush you can use pretty much any medium you like such as paints, colored pencils or markers.
Make the brush/bristles brown, the ferrule a light grey and the handle a light yellow/brown. You can also optionally leave a long narrow highlight (light reflection) running along the ferrule to show that is has a shiny metallic surface. If you do wish to add it then you can very lightly outline the highlight in pencil before coloring.
Conclusion
Paint brush can vary greatly in size and shape depending on what they are used for. The brush shown in this tutorial is the type that might be used by an artist for making paintings such as those on a canvas. It has a fairly generic and slightly stylized look.
