How to Draw a Scroll Step by Step
This easy tutorial shows how to draw a scroll in six steps with simple illustrated examples and quick drawing instructions.
The preview of the drawing stages for the scroll in shown above.
An item like this can be paper or parchment and can be drawn for a variety of different things. For example you can use it to show a peace of historical writing or as a magic item in a video game.
The drawing is fairly simple but you should still start it in pencil and make light lines that are easy to erase in case you do need to make a correction. You can darken them later on with a black pen or marker.
Step 1 – Draw the Curve of the Scroll
In this case the scroll will be drawing in 3/4 view. Start by making a wavy line to show it’s forward facing edge.
Step 2 – Set the Width With a Second Curve
To set the width of the scroll draw a second wavy line to show it’s other edge. This one should not go as far down as it will be partially covered by the bottom roll in later steps.
Step 3 – Draw the Curls
Extend the wave line for the frot side of the scroll to create curls on each of it’s ends as shown in the example.
Step 4 – Draw the Rolls
Draw a pair of rolls (the paper/parchment rolling up into what look like cylinders), one for the top and one at the bottom. Try and draw these in a way where the far edge of the scroll appears a bit smaller than the front one.
Step 5 – Finish the Line Drawing
To finish the line drawing first add the top and bottom edges of the scroll inside each of the rolled up portions. Next, confirm that you are happy with the way things look and make any tweaks/changes if necessary. Once you feel that you are happy with your drawing thus far go ahead and trace over it with a black pen or marker. If you don’t happen to have one around simply darken them with the pencil.
Step 6 – Color the Scroll
To color the scroll make it a light yellow. Also, to make the drawing look less flat you can give it a bit of shading as shown in the example.
Slightly darken the areas inside the rolled up sections as well as the bottoms of these parts as shown in the example.
An easy way to color the scroll is with pencils, paints or any method that allows for fairly light colors (markers can be a bit too bright). You can then add the shadows over top with light brown, grey or orange color.
Conclusion
The scroll shown in this tutorial can be drawn for variety of things. For example it can be used to represent some sort of historic text or an item in a fantasy themed game or show. Drawing it should be fairly simple, especially with the provided tips and examples.
