How to Draw a Pair of Socks Step by Step
This easy tutorial shows how to draw a pair of socks in six steps with illustrated examples and quick drawing tips for each of them.
Above is a preview of the drawing steps for the socks. In this case they will just be common sweat socks with a fairly simple design. While the tutorial shows how to draw a pair of them you can of course also draw just one or draw the two side by side instead of being stacked on top of one another.
Start the drawing in pencil and make light and easy to erase lines (in case you make a mistake). You can darken them later using a black pen or marker.
Step 1 – Draw the Outline of the First Sock
Begin with an outline of the overall shape of the first sock without any of the details. Basically you just want to draw it’s silhouette.
Be sure to have a narrower area at the top for the cuff and heel that sticks out like a bump.
Step 2 – Draw the Outline of the Second Sock
As mentioned in this case the socks will be drawn lying on top of each other. So most of the second sock will be hidden behind the first one.
Try and draw the visible part of the second sock close in shape to the first one so that they look like a matching pair.
Step 3 – Outline the Cuffs
For this simple step draw a pair of lines to define the bottoms of the cuffs. Again try and draw these in a way that both are roughly the same height for each sock.
Don’t be afraid to erase part of the drawing and redo it if things don’t seem to mach up.
Step 4 – Outline the Heels & Toes
Outline the inner part of the heel on the fist sock (it will be hidden on the second) and the toes on both socks. Try and draw nice and smooth curves as shown in the example.
Step 5 – Add The Cuff Details & Finish the Line Drawing
Finish the line drawing by adding some vertical lines fairly evenly spaced though the cuffs to show the folds that are so common to those areas.
Next trace over your lines with a black pen, marker or darken them with the pencil.
Step 6 – Color the Socks
You can color the socks any way you like using any medium or mix of mediums that you wish (paints, markers, colored pencils, etc…).
In this case the main parts of the socks will just be white and the cuffs, heel and toes will be a light blue.
Conclusion
Socks are quite easy to draw as you don’t have to be overly precise with their shape. The only thing you have to watch out for is that the two are similar enough that they look like a matching pair. Unless of course you want to draw a mismatched pair of socks on purpose.
